Tasting - Heinz Eifel Shine Riesling

Name: Heinz Eifel Shine

Variety: Riesling

Region: Mosel Valley
Country: Germany

Year: 2012
Price: $ 9.95

Winery Review: This drier-styled Riesling is bright, fruity and floral with crisp acidity and clean flavors of apple, pear and peach that compliment its stony minerality and earthy complexity. It serves well as an aperitif and matches a wide variety of foods, like lighter salad dishes, shellfish, cream sauces and also anything with a touch of spice.

My Review: The nose of this wine was very sweet, fruity, and floral. The taste was solid, while somewhat heavy on white grape. Overall, the body was light and delicate. This wasn't the sweetest of Rieslings I've tried, but it was still to sweet for my preferred taste. I did not pair this wine with any food.

Tasting - Atlas Cumbres Cabernet Sauvignon

Winery Review: intense red color with violet highlights, with clean, fresh and complex aromas of berries, plums, figs and pepper. Strong personality is in perfect balance with a medium body and pleasant tannins. Ideal for: red meats, cheeses and strong sauces.

My Review: The nose of this wine was very oak-like, earthy, and leathery. This nose definitely represents an old world style of wine making. The taste paralleled the nose almost exactly with a heavy oak flavor/earthiness. The body and texture were both bold and heavy. I did not pair this wine with any food.

Name: Villa da Filicaja
Variety: 90% Sangiovese. 5% Canaiolo, 5% Merlot
Region: Tuscany
Country: Italy
Year: 2009
Price: $13.00

Wine Unpaired: The nose of this Chianti was very clean and well balanced as well as floral and perfume like. The Taste contained moderate tannins with a hot finish. There were also undertones of leather and oak barrel within this Italian Chianti.

Italian Provolone Unpaired: Very good, super aged and his a kick!
Fresh Mozzarella Unpaired: Creamy, light, and delicate.
Paired with Provolone: The provolone and Chianti went hand in hand. They complimented each other nicely while still preserving their own distinct flavors throughout the taste. I would encourage this pairing to wine advocates.
Paired with Mozzarella. This pairing was not too exciting. The mozzarella was somewhat bland which resulted in the Chianti being the dominant flavor with this pairing. By themselves they are very good, but together, it is somewhat boring. One thing the mozzarella did offer was a nice, creamy texture which accompanied the Chianti with texture, just not flavor.

Name: Antica Terra
Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: Willamette Valley, OR
Country: USA
Year: 2009
Price: $50 (on sale for $30)

Wine Unpaired: The nose of this wine carried scents of plastic, earthiness, and sand. The taste possessed a hot finish and very solid/balanced. There were hints of mustiness as well within the taste.

Smoked Gouda Unpaired: Smooth yet bold, creamy and delicious.
Smoked Cheddar Unpaired: Very bold and sharp in cheddar flavor.
Paired with Smoked Gouda: Wow! What a flavor combination! The Old World style of this Pinot Noir truly brought out the deep richness offered by the Smoked Gouda. Neither one of this over powered each other and altogether was an excellent pairing!
Paired with Smoked Cheddar: Interestingly, the flavors within this pairing served to mellow each other out. More specifically, the oakiness of the wine mellowed out the sharpness of the Smoked Cheddar, and Vice Verse. All around a great choice of cheese to pair with the bold, sophisticated Pinot Noir.

Name: Delta Landing
Variety: Zinfandel
Region: Lodi, CA
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price: $15

Wine Unpaired: After conducting a "sniffy sniff" I picked up on scents of leather, smokiness, and oak barrel. The taste seemed to contain moderate tannins with the leather and smokiness coming through strong from the nose.

Havarti Dill Unpaired: Fresh, Creamy, and Delicate.
Basil/Olive Oil Asiago: Similar to a Parmesan Cheese with strong hints of Basil.
Paired with Havarti Dill: Truthfully these two did not compliment each other very well. The basil was way too overpowering for the oak barrel flavor offered by the Zinfandel. Overall, the pairing was just nasty and not one I would recommend to wine advocates, mainly because of the overpowering basil.
Paired with Asiago: A complete turn around from the last cheese. These Asiago paired much better with the Zinfandel as each flavor acted to mellow each other out. The smoothness of the Asiago complimented the dark berry finish offered by the Zinfandel. I would strongly encourage this pairing to any wine advocates out there.

Name: Pinot Gris Tradition
Variety: Pinot Gris
Region: Loire Valley
Country: France
Year: 2013
Price: $13

Wine Unpaired: The nose of this Pinot Grigio was clean and very apple like with light hints of Peach. The taste was very smooth and didn't contain too much texture. Not too bold and very well balanced.

Feta Goat Cheese Unpaired: SALT!!!!  or Salt Monster as Gary Vaynerchuk might say! Overall thischeese was crumbly and very, very salty!
Paired with Feta Goat Cheese: The combination of flavors brought out a huge mozzarella flavor. The wine and cheese on their own were very bold, but together they mellowed each other out nicely.

Name: Chateaux La Coudraie
Variety: 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Semillon, 25% Muscadelle
Region: Bordeaux
Country: France
Year: 2011
Price: $11

Wine Unpaired: The nose of this wine was very acidic, soapy, and citrus like. The taste offered hints of sour apple while containing a very delicate texture. Well balanced and well rounded. It also possessed medium tannins and a warm finish.

Sheep's Milk Feta Unpaired: Very creamy and subtle like a Mozzarella.
Paired with Sheep's Milk Feta: The wine and cheese together was nothing like the they tasted separately. The deep richness of the feta was brought out by the citrus like flavor of the wine. It wasn't smoked but the wine made it seem like it had accents of smoke. I would encourage this pairing to any wine advocates.

Tasting - R Wines Eco. Love Riesling

Name: R Wines Eco. Love Riesling
Variety: Riesling

Region:South Island
Country: New Zealand

My Review: The nose of this wine was hot and rubbery. There were heavy scents of spices from this Riesling, which to me was indicative of how various regions flavor their wines differently. To my liking, this Riesling was not overly sweet like most. It was very spicy and has a nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. It was also somewhat "musty" and contained a long finish. I did not pair this wine with any food.

Tasting - Toschi Cabernet Sauvignon

Winery Review: Well-balanced flavors of dark berries and plums. Spicy fruit finish.

My Review: The nose of this wine offered heavy scents of grape and apple, blended nicely together. The taste of this wine had a medium-high body, with a nice texture. Again, very well distinction of all three fruits. Floral tones were again present, with a peppery, hot finish.  I did not pair this wine with any food.

Tasting - Canyon Road Pinot Noir

Name: Canyon Road Pinot Noir

Country:
USA

Year: 2012
Price: $6.95

Winery Review: Rich, fruit forward cherry flavors, soft tannins, a medium body and a smooth velvety finish. Pairs well with creamy soups, salmon, and savory pork dishes.

My Review: The nose of this wine was sweet and carried scents of raspberry and freshly baked cherry pie. There were also floral undertones present with the smell. The texture was like that of velvet with the dark sweet cherries coming through from the nose. The finish was somewhat hot and peppery, but it contained a good balance overall. I did not pair this wine with any food.

Tasting - Wine Men of Gotham Chardonnay/Semillon

Name: Wine Men of Gotham Chardonnay Semillon
Variety: Chardonnay (80%), Semillon (20%) blend

Winery Review: Chardonnay Semillon is a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Semillon. It gives a moderate intensity of melon, guava, apricot and butterscotch aromas. The medium bodied palate provides attractive acidity along with plenty of tropical fruit flavors and a medium-long finish.

My Review: While the nose of this wine was not too heavy, it did offer scents of peach and caramel, with a slight citrus edge. When tasting this wine, it was obvious that Chardonnay was the dominant grape in this blend, it made a huge presence. There were also hints of pineapple and clove at the finish. I did not pair this wine with any food.

Tasting - Indwe Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Indwe Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc

Region: Western Cape

Country: South Africa

Year: 2012

Price: $7.95

Winery Review:Grapes are meticulously sourced from our grape producers along the Coastal region of the Western Cape ensuring complexity and freshness in the wine. Indwe Sauvignon Blanc is full of layers, balance and persistence. The wine is imbued with tropical and citrus notes, with hints of melon and gooseberry flavors.

My Review: The nose of this Sauvignon Blanc offered hints grass and soapiness, while containing under tones of citrus or tart apple. As far as the taste, the alcohol really came through to add to it's mild finish. Overall there was good balance, and although I did not pair this with any food, I feel like it would pair well with some sort of fish like salmon.

Winery Review: A blend of Moscato and Rabosos grapes it has a pale rose color, notes of red berries (strawberry and raspberry), with the characteristic and fragrant bouquet and palate that is typical of the Moscato grape.

My Review: Like most Moscato's I've tried, the nose on this Pink Moscato smelled very sweet. More specifically it had scents of Welch's White Grape Peach. The taste of this wine was very sparkly and clean. Additionally, there were strong under tones of apricot and peach, much like the nose. I did not pair this wine with any food.

Tasting - Weinert Carascal

Name: Weinert Carascal
Variety: Blended (40% Malbec 35% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Merlot)
Region: Argentina
Country: Argentina
Year: 2008
Price:
$ 13.95

Winery Review: Aged for two years in cask, the 2008 Carrascal is a blend of 40% Malbec, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. It has a rustic blackberry, scorched earth and leather-scented bouquet with touches of pressed flowers. The palate is well-balanced with crisp tannins, expressive black tarry fruit and a Bordeaux-like finish. Drink now-2016.

My Review: The nose of this wine was very leathery with hints of spice such as Paprika. Humorously enough, there seemed (to me) to be mild hints of manure or woods/forest. The taste of this wine was very earthy with hints of an oak barrel coming through. I did not pair this wine with any food.
